Unicorns and Volcanoes

After having explored women's emotional world with my

Pink Tales

, I could not help but deepen and explore this infinite topic.

Women have the power of creating life, of literally making people and make them grow phisically and develop psyhologically but these responsibilities are far too underestimated in our society.

Women today are granted access to instruction and have had the possibility to show how good they are, still their wages are lower than those of men.

Being a woman, I do feel we need to redefine our self image and discover who we are, beyond any useless sterotype and with a loving eye on ourselves.

MAKING OF

Florence From The Roof

Giorgio La Pira

The mystery of the roofs of Florence is this: they are, with the Dome, almost a sacrament that mirrors and spreads beauty, purity and heavenly peace!
Giorgio La Pira

I miei preferiti? Il ritratto di Irene Signorini, la giovane padrona di casa, e i suoi tips from the roof.

When Maria of Capitale Creativo called me, I was not sure wether I could make it. This is not my usual work but I love challenges, and accepted to draw the 360° landscape you can enjoy from the terrace of these wonderful Florence from the roof apartements in the unique quarter of Santa Croce. Working on this project has been so fun I could never have imagined, and I experimented a new technique mixing digital drawings with watercolor painting starting from some of the crispy photos Francesco Spighi made for the venue. One email after the other with Lucilla Novelli and finally the illustrations came to life. My favorites? The portrait of Irene Signorini, the young landlady, and her tips from the roof.

PATHS #5. Right Livelihood.

SAMMA-AJIVA

Proper Livelihood, Also called RIGHT LIVELIHOOD. This is a livelihood based on correct action the ethical principal of non-exploitation.  The basis of an Ideal society.

"Right livelihood is the fifth step on the path. It is only natural and right that we should earn our living. Often, many of us don't particularly enjoy our jobs. We can't wait to get home from work and begrudge the amount of time that our job takes away from our enjoyment of the good life. Perhaps, we might wish we had a more glamorous job. We don't feel that our job in a factory or office is in keeping with the image we want to project. The truth is, that we should be glad of our job, whatever it is. We should form a simple relationship with it. We need to perform it properly, with attention to detail."

ART ON ETSY #6. BRIANA TAYLOR

Glass and water. Trasparent distorsions of a reflex. This is what strikes me most of her work. And the simple complexity of her compositions.

So happy to introduce today Briana Taylor.

This is what Briana says about her life "I’ve been an artist all my life, but I only became very serious about it after going back to college as an older student. I graduated as Valedictorian from Holyoke Community College with an AS in Visual Arts. I then went to Mount Holyoke College, where I graduated Cum Laude in 1998 with a BA in Studio Art and English. I have maintained a professional studio since then and have never stopped making art."

WHEN DID YOU START BEING AN ARTIST?

Ever since I could work with tools and materials I’ve been making things. I am compelled to work with my hands in a creative way and it’s always been a part of me.

WHO INFLUENCED YOU?

At an early age, I was inspired by seeing art in museums, on TV, and all around me. Art is everywhere if you take the time to see it, even in everyday objects. Someone had to think of it, design it, create it. I was influenced by how much it plays a part in our everyday lives, and amazed by how often people failed to recognize it. When I told my mother I wanted to go to art school, she said I should do something practical, something that I could actually be employed doing. Creative people should be encouraged. There is a lot of “practical art” to be made.

WHAT MAKES YOUR WORK SPECIAL?

The art I’m making now is special to me because it’s very sentimental. Maybe not so clearly to the average viewer, but to me. I like to choose subjects that are meaningful to me and my life. The Ball jars, for instance, are nostalgic personally, but are also culturally historic. Every year, my mother, grandmother, sister, and I, would gather our vegetables to can together. Both my mom and grandmother are gone now, but I still make jellies and can vegetables every year and think of them. I’ve had people become inspired to tell me their personal stories about these objects when they see my work. It’s a connection that a lot of us can still find.

WHERE DO YOU LOVE TO WORK?

Ha! I’m kind of a diva when it comes to working! I’m one of those people that has to have everything in its place and everything clean before I can begin. Other than the complete OCD ritual of the clean, I like to work where there is a lot of light and fresh air. I work more in the spring/summer/fall than in winter, mostly because I can open the windows.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO SELL ON ETSY?

I opened my painting shop on Etsy in July of 2007, so I’ve been with them for a while now. I am also a quilter and have another shop called BtaylorQuilts and have been selling my sewn goods since December 2007. I can’t even remember how I discovered Etsy for the first time, but I do remember setting up my shops and being very excited to have my first sales.

Mostly I decided to sell on Etsy because it was very pretty to look at back then, there was a community of like minded artisans to connect with, and it was an inexpensive platform.

The making of Racconti Rosa

Just one of the many projects I've been working on lately. Here are some images of the making of, pretty soon the final result of my Pink Tales ready to be shared!

Plates

I remember those walls from my childhood. In the rather cold and old living rooms of my Grandmother's friends, plates where showcased everywhere. Now those plates have come into fashion again, thanks to a great design renewal many manufacturers made during the last years. And there are many artists painting on plates. Here is an example of display.

Today's ART CURATOR presents

CONTEMPORARY ART DAILY

, a Daily Journal of International Exhibitions. This is not really a curator's site, but I think it's a very good way to browse for artworks and discover very interesting artists. Plus, if you're an artist yourself, you can submit your exhibit.
