Collaboration with MIO store Firenze

So glad to announce my collaboration with MIO concept store in Florence, where you can find my greeting cards and my BOTANICA earrings, part of my Wearable Art project. 

Sono felice di annunciare la mia collaborazione con MIO concept store a Firenze, dove potete trovare i miei biglietti di auguri e gli orecchini BOTANICA, parte del progetto Arte da Indossare.

MIO is a little magic box, a store entirely dedicated to independent design, arts and crafts, located in Via della Spada 34/r, right in the city centre of Florence, just a few steps from the Marino Marini museum and Via Tornabuoni, not far from the train station. A tip for those in Florence for the first time, the /r in the address stands for "rosso", meaning red, special numbers that you can find in the city together with the black ones.

MIO è una piccola scatola magica, un negozio interamente dedicato al design e all'artigianato indipendente situato in Via della Spada 34/r, a due passi dal museo Marino Marini, proprio dietro Via Tornabuoni e non lontano dalla stazione. Una dritta per i non fiorentini, la /r dell'indirizzo sta per rosso, una serie di numeri che si alternano a quelli neri nella numerazione degli sporti su strada. 

I love working with MIO because I totally feel at ease with the concept behind it. Antje D'Almeida started this little, beautifully crowded five years ago and it's been a blast ever since, with international press mentions and clients from around the world appreciating the magic of a wide range of objects sprouting from talented creative minds.

Mi piace lavorare con MIO perchè mi sento a mio agio con l'idea che c'è dietro. Antje D'Almeida ha aperto questo piccolo spazio pieno zeppo di cose belle cinque anni fa, e da allora è stato un successo, con menzioni su stampa internazionale e clienti da tutto il mondo che apprezzano la magia di tanti oggetti inventati da menti creative e talentuose. 

Antje is a German born globetrotter, who has lived around the world for more than 25 years. Life in New York, Paris, Provence, Miami, Tuscan Chianti hills and finally Florence have brought her a rich experience both of the simplicity and beauty of country life and the buzz and sophistication of cosmopolitan live. After working for Gucci, YSL, a luxury real estate at Palazzo Tornabuoni, the Four Season’s run Private Residence Club in Florence and her 10 years of country life in Provence and Chianti vineyards, she started a research combining enviromental sustainability with the elegance of design. 

Antje è una viaggiatrice nata in Germania che ha vissuto in vari paesi del mondo per più di 25 anni. La vita a New York, Parigi, la Provenza, Miami, le colline del Chianti e infine Firenze le hanno portato una ricca esperienza della semplicità e bellezza della vita di campagna e del fermento della vita metropolitana. Con una lunga e vasta esperienza lavorativa, che include Gucci, YSL, il Four Season's, Antje ha cominciato una ricerca che combina sostenibilità e eleganza del design.  

Antje has a clear view of the idea guiding her curator's work for the shop: “Design inspired by the elegance of awareness” is my main research criteria. Awareness of the moment creates a certain space which gives room for creativity in its most natural and elegant form. During my travels I constantly meet people who really live this “playful dance” and come up with incredible ideas. It is so much fun to work with these designers or artists that I decided in 2011 to open MIO store. And sharing these discoveries and connections with MIO clients is the best of all! Each client who leaves the store with a smile confirms MIO’s idea and makes me happy."

Antje ha un'idea chiara del suo lavoro di curatrice per il negozio e racconta: " Il design ispirato dall'eleganza della consapevolezza è il mio criterio fondamentale nella ricerca. La consapevolezza del momento crea spazio per la creatività nella sua forma più naturale ed elegante. Durante i miei viaggi incontro costantemente persone che vivono questa "danza giocosa" e hanno idee incredibili. E' per me così divertente lavorare con i designer e gli artisti che, nel 2011, ho deciso di aprire il negozio MIO. E condividere queste scoperte e connessioni con i clienti è davvero il massimo! Ogni cliente che esce dal negozio con un sorriso conferma che è stata l'idea giusta e mi rende felice."

Ho chiesto poi, da quale passione è nata l'idea del negozio e in base a quale criterio selezioni gli oggetti?

"L’idea è nata dalla mia passione per il design e sopratutto per l’arte di vivere con gioia, amore ed eleganza, unite alla mia ricerca personale di crescita ed evoluzione umana. Il motto del mio criterio di selezione è trovare “design inspired by the elegance of awareness” o design inspirato della eleganza che deriva dalla consapevolezza o presenza “ qui e adesso".

Nella tua bottega si trovano produzioni uniche e particolari. Dove trovi questi talenti creativi?

"All’inizio ho dovuto cercare lontano Parigi, NYC, Londra… oggi la maggioranxa dei designer vive a Firenze o in Toscana, e sono loro a trovarmi e propormi le loro creazioni. E' per me fondamentale che entrambi ci sentiamo in una situazione “win-win”. Infatti si tratta di una collaborazione, lavoriamo insieme alla ricerca di cose uniche e particolari."

Oltre ai fiorentini, hai molti clienti da tutta Italia e stranieri, cosa apprezzano maggiormente delle nuove produzioni italiane?

"Il 60 % dei nostri clienti è straniero, il 20 % touristi italiani e il 20 % Fiorentini, escluso il periodo natalizio. Gli stranieri apprezzano la diversità, il fatto a mano, la ricerca con la conoscenza personale dei creatori."

La raccolta delle olive

A vibrant autumn, a neat sky, mild air. And so many olives in just one saturday. 

Un autunno acceso, un cielo preciso, l'aria mite. E tantissime olive in un solo sabato.

It's the Tuscan countryside, soft hills as a carpet.

E' la campagna toscana, morbide colline come tappeto.

The olive is a sacred plant in all the Mediterranean area and the Middle East, a symbol fo peace, strenght, faith, triumph, victory, honor, safeness, abundance, union, eternity.

L'olivo è un albero sacro in tutto il mediterraneo e vicino oriente, simbolo di pace, forza, fede, trionfo, vittoria, onore, salvezza, prosperità, unione, eternità.

Since prehistory the olive tree is part of myths, religions, ceremonies, charms. Olimpic champions were crowned wit olive brunches and an apoule full of oil. Romans made the same with valiant citizens. The Genesis and the Old Testament often speak about this tree. Its wood is hard but ductile and has been used for making tools since centuries. But the most precious part are its fruits.

Fin dalla preistoria l'olivo è parte di miti, religioni, riti, incantesimi. Atleti olimpici premiati con corona d'olivo e ampolla d'olio. Cittadini romani valorosi incoronati con frasche d'olivo. Genesi e Antico Testamento parlano spesso di questa pianta. Il suo legno è duro ma lavorabile ed p stato usato per fare utensili da milenni. Ma la parte più preziosa sono i frutti.

In October, the trees are full of mature olives.

In ottobre, i rami sono carichi di olive mature.

The olives fall on the nets, symbolic objects meaning harvest, nourishment, food. Gathering the fruits that nature gives us with our work.

Le olive cadono sulle reti, oggetti simbolici legato alla raccolta, al nutrimento, al cibo. Raccolgono i frutti del lavoro e ciò che la natura ci regala. 

Harvesting involves many people, for taking over, pulling the nets, grabbing branches to pull out olives, and chatting and laughing. 

Bisogna essere in molti per lavorare alla raccolta, darsi il cambio, tirare le reti, afferrare i rami per battere le olive e chiacchierare e ridere. 

And climbing. 

E arrampicarsi. 

Our bodies, minds and spirits have been build and have been doing this since forever. Nurturing ourselves with sun and work, exchange and crop, play and effort is a healthy ritual.

Così funzionano il nostro corpo, la nostra mente, la nostra anima da sempre. Nutrire noi stessi di sole e lavoro, scambio e raccolto, gioco e fatica è un rito benefico.

Children are wise, and want to work. It's not only a game, they feel they are build for this, for living in nature, cooperating, climbing and discover spiders and berries, finding treasures, for using their bodies smartly.

I bambini, saggi, vogliono lavorare. Non è solo un gioco, sentono di essere progettati per quello, per stare con la natura, contribuire, arrampicarsi e scovare ragni e bacche, cercare tesori, usare il proprio corpo in maniera intelligente.

"Che diavolo succede qui oggi? Chi sono tutte queste persone?"

Neighbours help each other during the harvest, and the owners prepare an outdoor lunch for everyone. Thanks to the Cloughs for inviting us.

I vicini si aiutano a vicenda durante le raccolte, e i padroni di casa preparano il pranzo all'aperto per tutti. Grazie ai Cloughs per averci invitati.

14 boxes full, 300kg of olives ready for the olive press of the mill is the result of our productive day up in the air.

14 casse piene, 300 kg di olive pronte per il frantoio sono il risultato della nostra giornata produttiva sugli alberi.

And when the oil is ready, it needs a cozy bottle. And most of all it needs a special, custom label for all of us, carrying the memory of a special day. And yes, I could say this is the part I love most, but it's not true because I prefer sitting and tasting the new oil with fragrant tuscan bread. 

E quando l'olio è pronto, c'è bisogno di una bella bottiglia. Ma soprattutto di un'etichetta speciale, personalizzata per tutti i miei amici, per ricordare una giornata speciale. E si, potrei dire che questa è la parte che preferisco, ma non sarebbe vero, perchè è molto meglio mettersi comodi e gustare l'olio nuovo con una fetta di pane toscano, come quando ero piccola. E buon San Martino a tutti!

Au rendez-vous des amis

If you've chosen to visit Alberto Burri's collection in Città di Castello after my enthusiastic post, you might want to see another exhibition in another beautiful venue. 

Se avete scelto di visitare la collezione Burri a Città di Castello in seguito al mio post entusiasta, vi interesserà vedere un'altra mostra, in un'altra sede di prestigio. 

The Palazzo Vitelli was built during the second half of the XVI century, it is sumptuously decorated with frescos and "grottesche", and has a huge garden with a grotto and beautiful fountains.

Palazzo Vitelli fu costruito durante la seconda metà del XVI secolo, è sontuosamente decorato con affreschi,  grottesche, soffitti a cassettoni e ha un enorme giardino con una grotta e belle fontane.

Palazzo Vitelli is hosting, in occasion of alberto Burri's 100th anniversary, a selection of contemporary artworks called "Au rendez-vous des amis" after the piece by Max Ernst, showcasing the work of 66 international artists. 

Palazzo Vitelli ospita, in occasione del centenario dalla nascita di Alberto Burri, una selezione di opere d'arte contemporanee intitolata "Au rendez-vous des amis", dall'opera di Max Ernst, di 66 artisti internazionali.

Among my favorites is "Mare finito", 2015, by Giuseppe Stampone, dealing with the topic of immigration.

And the delicate work of Anita Sieff "Portable Interiors", made of 49 drawings and writings on canvas.

And I loved the work of Serbian artist Jusuf Hadžifejzović " Painted Traces of Dry Prints of the Products"(2014-2015).

And again, the contrast between contemporary art and the ancient mansion is fascinating

Emily Dickinson

Entering the Protestant Cemetery on a natural hill just outside the old city walls of Florence. It was active for 50 years only, from 1827 to 1877. 

Entrata al cimitero protestante, che sorge su una collina naturale subito fuori le antiche mura di Firenze. E' stato attivo per soli 50 anni, dal 1827 al 1877.

I was actracted by the flowers. The Iris is the symbol of Florence and you can stare at a sea of thousands of purple flowers and smell their gentle perfume. Spring is life but of course Death is approaching fast cutting off trims. This place is soaking romanticism in every possible way. 

Sono stata attratta dai fiori. Il giglio è il simbolo di Firenze e si vedeva dai viali un mare di centinaia di fiori viola, con il loro profumo delicato. La primavera è Vita ma qui la Morte arriva con la falce a tagliare tutto. Questo posto emana romanticismo in ogni suo angolo.

Crosses and flowers. Life and death. This place has inspired the "Isle of the Dead", the best-known painting of Swiss Symbolist artist Arnold Böcklin. He painted the first three versions of his artwork in this cemetery. 

Croci e fiori. Vita e morte. Qui il simbolista svizzero Arnold Böcklin ha avuto l'ispirazione per il suo famoso dipinto "L'isola dei morti". Dipinse qui le prime tre versioni dell'opera.

For many death is grief. But I found two women chatting nicely while sitting on a bench on top of the hill. 

Per molti la morte è dolore. Ma ho trovato due signore che chiacchieravano sorridendo sedute su una panchina in cima alla collina. 

Important people are buried here. Important men and women.

Qui sono sepolte persone importanti. Uomini ma anche donne. 

Like Elisabeth Barret Browning and Frances Trollope. Two very talented women of wit. I can imagine they would have talked and talked under the cypress getting upset against slavery. Elisabeth came from a family of Jamaican slave-owners and was a half-blood herself. She hated slavery. Frances, or Fanny, after travelling between industrial England and colonial America, had witnessed the two different kinds of slavery and had raised her voice against this condition in her novels.

Come Elisabeth Barrett Browning e Frances Trollope. Due talentuose donne d'ingegno. Le posso immaginare che chiacchierano e chiacchierano sotto il cipresso e si arrabbiano contro la schiavitù. Elisabeth veniva da una famiglia di padroni di schiavi giamaicana, ed era lei stessa una mezzo sangue. Odiava la schiavitù. Frances, o Fanny, dopo aver viaggiato tra l'Inghilterra industriale e l'America, era stata testimone di questi due tipi di schiavitù in entrambe le nazioni e aveva alzato la voce contro queste condizioni nei suoi romanzi.

This is where Elisabeth Barrett Browning was buried. It seems that Emily Dickinson was inspired to write the poem "The Souls selects her own Society" after seeing a picture of this tomb.
