Today I'm introducing two paintings belonging to the series called DROPS: COAL and FEATHER. These artworks complete each other in some ways, and will tell you a story of Yin and Yang, cold and warm, light and heavy, hard and fluffy, taking place both in the dephts of the earth and in the highest sky. This is the season when the night becomes longer than the day, cold days are bound to win over warm ones and the dark is stronger than the light. But only until the shortest day, the winter solstice, that will be in December 21st this year.
Oggi ti presento due nuove opere appartenenti alla serie DROPS: COAL e FEATHER. Questi dipinti si completano in un certo senso, e raccontano una storia di Yin e Yang, freddo e caldo, leggerezza e pesantezza, durezza e morbidezza, che si svolgono nel cuore della terra e nell'ampia distesa dei cieli. Questa è la stagione in cui la notte diventa più lunga del giorno, il freddo vince sul caldo e il buio sulla luce. Fino a raggiungere il giorno più corto, il solstizio d'inverno, che sarà il 21 dicembre quest'anno.

The painting DROPS. COAL tells you a story about the night of times, 300 millions of year ago and more, when incredibly huge forests made of uncommonly enormous and weirdly shaped trees lived upon this earth, bearing a small range of species but changing our world forever. These forests were made of plants called Lycopsids, that have inspired the tree of the painting.
Il dipinto DROPS. COAL racconta una storia che arriva a noi dalla notte dei tempi, più di 300 milioni di anni fa, quando una distesa infinita di foreste fatte di alberi enormi e dalla forma strana ricopriva la nostra terra, con una ridotta varietà di specie ma destinate a cambiare il nostro mondo per sempre. Queste foreste erano fatte di piante chiamate Lycopsidi, che hanno ispirato l'albero del disegno.
The plants that were in the carboniferous period were very strange and most of them were almost leafless until they grew older because they did not branch until fully grown, and would have spent much of their lives as unbranched poles. Just to get an idea, they vaguely resembled to plants present in a tropical climate, since they grew in swamps. Some of them, called Lepidodendron, had tall, thick trunks covered in closely packed diamond-shaped leaf scars, composed of green, photosynthetic tissue which made it similar to a giant herb. There were giants up to 50 metres high but, since they had shallow root systems, fell over easily, piling up on one another. This enormous mass of trees sucked carbon from the air, and released oxygen in such a greater quantity than we have today. What is strange is that they didn't decompose because wood eaters microbes did't show up yet, so the carbon stayed in the wood and was not released again into the atmosphere. These plants foxilized and became the enormous source of the shiny black carbon we still use today.
Le piante del carbonifero erano molto strane e la maggior parte di loro era quasi senza foglie fino a che non diventavano più grandi perchè non ramificavano fino all'età adulta, e così passavano la maggior parte della loro vita come se fossero dei pali. Tanto per avere un'idea, somigliavano vagamente alle piante presenti nei climi tropicali, dato che crescevano in zone paludose. Alcune di loro, chiamate Lepidodendri, avevano dei tronchi sottili ricoperti di scaglie a forma di diamante, composte di tessuto fotosintetico verde, che li rendeva simili ad erbe giganti. Potevano raggiungere i 50 metri ma, dato che avevano radici superficiali, cadevano facilmente ammassandosi gli uni sugli altri. Questa enorme massa di alberi assorbiva il carbone presente nell'aria e rilasciava ossigeno in quantità molto maggiori rispetto a quelle presenti oggi nell'aria. La cosa strana è che non si decomponevano perchè non esistevano ancora i batteri in grado di farlo, così il carbone rimaneva intrappolato nel legno e non veniva nuovamente rilasciato nell'atmosfera. Queste piante si sono fossilizzate e diventarono l'enorme fonte di carbone nero e lucente che usiamo oggi.

On the other hand, the artwork DROPS. FEATHER, tells a story of lightness and leads into the magic of flight. Feathers and plumes are the instrument that helps birds in flight, thermal insulation, and waterproofing. Also, their colour always has a meaning in communication, protection and social interaction.
Dall'altro lato, l'opera DROPS. FEATHER, racconta una storia di leggerezza e porta nella magia del volo. Le penne e le piume sono gli strumenti che aiutano gli uccelli per il volo, l'isolazione termica e l'isolamento dall'acqua. Inoltre, il loro colore ha sempre un significato nella comunicazione, protezione e interazione sociale.
Migratory birds afford each year a long journey to reach warmer lands, driven primarily by availability of food. Migratory birds are funneled on to specific routes by natural barriers and are able to fly over the oceans, crossing continents and covering incredibly long distances that can reach more than 10.000 km. The timing of migration seems to be controlled primarily by changes in day length and migrating birds navigate using celestial cues from the sun and stars, the earth's magnetic field, and mental maps.
Gli uccelli migratori affrontano ogni anno un lungo viaggio per raggiungere terre più calde, spinti soprattutto dalla ricerca di cibo. Vengono incanalati in determinate tratte dalle barriere naturali e sono capaci di volare attraverso gli oceani, attraversare interi continenti per distanze incredibilmente lunghe, che possono superare i 10.000 chilometri. Il tempo della migrazione sembra essere controllato da cambiamenti nella lunghezza del giorno e durante la migrazione gli uccelli si orientano con il sole e le stelle, il campo magnetico terrestre e mappe mentali.
Moreover, feathers are religious objects and have an iconic role, being sacred to many religious and cultural traditions of the world since the beginning of time. Plumage has great cultural and spiritual value symbolising flight, ascension and healing powers, and it has been regarded as both ceremonial and decorative. In Greek mythology, Daedelus the inventor and Icarus tried to escape the maze by attaching feathered wings to their shoulders with wax, but Icarus flew too high and it was melted by the Sun.
Inoltre le piume sono oggetti religiosi e hanno un ruolo iconico, essendo sacre in molte religioni e tradizioni culturali del mondo. Il piumaggio può avere una grande valenza simbolica e spirituale rappresentando il volo, l'ascensione ed essendo così associato a poteri curativi. Infatti è utilizzato sia come cerimoniale che decorativo. Nella mitologia greca, Dedalo e Icaro scapparono dal labirinto attaccando ali piumate alle loro spalle con la cera, ma Icaro volò troppo in alto e il sole la sciolse.

As you might already know, the series of paintings called DROPS is the inspiration for the WEARABLE ART project. The paintings COAL and FEATHER make no exception, so let me introduce two new scarves of the collection. The first is as black as coal with shiny reflexes and the second has a powdery like quality of a tender nude or old rose hue.
Also, they will both be part of the Calendar 2018, which is about to arrive for you as a present, just like every year!
Come già sapete, la serie DROPS è di ispirazione per il progetto ARTE DA INDOSSARE. I dipinti COAL e FEATHER non fanno eccezione e quindi vi presento anche due nuove sciarpe della collezione. La prima è nera come il carbone con riflessi luccicanti e la seconda ha un carattere polveroso e un color carne o rosa antico.
Queste opere saranno anche sul Calendario 2018, che sta per arrivare, in regalo come ogni anno!
